28mm Mutants

Today's subject is a batch of 10 28mm post-apocalypse mutants that I snuck in between batches of Iberians for Saga.  They are a mix of 5 from Brigade Games that I bought way back at Historicon 2016 and 5 bought from Battle Valor Games in June 2020.  They all have obvious mutations, such as claw arms, two heads or tentacles.  The Battle Valor ones are chunkier with more equipment but I think they mix well.

I used a variety of different skintones and a mix of Vallejo/P3/Iron Wind/Army Painter/GW contrast paints.

I have painted many of the Brigade post-apocalypse range before but I've been holding these back until I was in the mood to paint them.  There are more mutants in their range that I don't have and they are all very different.  I envisage using the two-headed one as the leader.  I think my favorite is the second from left with all the tentacles; there is even one coming out of one the mask's eyeholes.  I wasn't sure how to paint the fly's head but I think it turned out ok.

These four are the Pulp50 Waste Marauder pack from Battle Valor.  Lots of deformed arms and weird eyes.  As with the previous Battle Valor minis I painted, I really like the variety of equipment they are carrying.

Also from Battle Valor is the Sci-Fi 40 Yeti with Marauder Rider pack.  I left the rider off.  He is armed with an axe.

With one of the Brigade mutants to show scale.

The mutant mob has assembled.

Historicon 2019 - Games I Ran

This year at Historicon I ran two sessions of the same scenario, the "Battle of Montrose Platform".  I used the new Apocalypse version of the 7TV rules from Crooked Dice.  The mechanics are the same as the original spy version, with new vehicle rules to allow Mad-Max type antics.

The original idea for this scenario started with the model of an oil rig that I obtained from Wargame Model Mods through a Kickstarter in December 2017.  During Historicon 2018 as I was walking around the dealer hall with my friend Mike, we discussed ideas on how to use it this year.  I had a general outline and bought the first boats that day.

The scenario features 2 sides of 3 players each attempting to scavenge what they can from an oil platform in the post-apocalypse North Sea.  On one side, the Cult of the King, led by Elvis (real or impersonator?) is accompanied by 2 bands of Marauders.  The other side consisted of the Engineer's Guild (including a robot), the People's Militia and a Biker Gang they had hired for extra muscle.

The board also included a wrecked ship.  There were 11 objective markers spread throughout both the ship and platform, 10 worth 1 victory point and the last worth 1d6 victory points.  The other way to obtain victory points was to kill opposing Stars or Co-Stars (players had 1 of each along with 7-8 Extras). I had a random encounter table I rolled 1d6 on when a door was opened or room entered.  Results included giant rats, giant ticks, giant beetles, zombies and fellow survivors.

The Friday game went to the Engineers and their allies 6-5 VPs.  The Saturday game went to Elvis 9-6 VPs.  I had a fun time and the players seemed to as well.

For 7TV players, each cast was approximately 30 points.  I used one deck of countdown cards, with one card played per side per turn.

Hail to the King, Baby!
The Cult of the King was inspired by the song "Elvis is Everywhere" by Mojo Nixon, particularly the lyric "Elvis needs boats!"

Historicon 2018 - Games I Ran

This year at Historicon I signed up to run a game using the 7TV spy-fi rules by Crooked Dice.  I ran the same scenario twice, once on Friday night and once Saturday morning.  Both games were full with 6 players each time.  I think it went well and may roll this scenario out again someday.

The event description was:

Dial X for Missile
SHIVA (Secret Headquarters of International Villainous Agents) is building a secret weapon as part of their evil plan to rule the world. British intelligence agency Department X has located SHIVA's base. Can they destroy the weapon before it is activated? 60s style spy-fi action using the 7TV rules.

The scenario featured the heroes of Department X attacking the villains of SHIVA at 3 different points on an island in the Outer Hebrides off the coast of Scotland.

(1) A freighter carrying the final pieces needed to complete the missile.
(2) The missile silo.
(3) The underground base that housed the computers needed to launch the missile.

Each area was set up as a separate 2-player battle.  I did  because some of the features of 7TV, such as the countdown deck, which are random events that occur each turn, work better with fewer players.  It also speeds up the game, so each pair of players could play at their own speed.  The scenario was set to allow up to 9 turns for each player.

I neglected to take any pictures of the first session but my friend Mike who was playing took a few and they are included at the end.

The board ready for players:
The freighter

The missile silo is to the left of the ruined church

The secret base

Initial setups on turn 1.

The game is underway.

X-Commandos advance towards the freighter.
The ship's crew is advancing along the beach.

Good guys (in the foreground) are taking fire as they advance towards the ruined church.

The X-Commandos are assaulting the room at bottom left.  Meanwhile, one commando in the top right has been hypnotized (indicated by a blue marker) and has joined the villains.  A black panther is on the prowl in the center.

Dept X is taking heavy losses.

Heroic reinforcements arrive in a Land Rover at bottom.

The missile silo is open.

The Land Rover and has been destroyed in an explosion (event from a countdown card).

Pandora King, leader of the Dept X team attacking the missile silo, is down.  She took out the mad scientist Doctor Mao before succumbing to her wounds.

It was just a flesh wound!  Pandora King returns to the fight (countdown card event).

Evil mercenary Ernst Kohner leads a counterattack accompanied by 3 minions and an attack dog.

The freighter was also carrying a giant gorilla, which has been set loose and is charging the X-Commandos near the beach.

The Dept X munitions expert set a charge earlier in the game and has detonated it, killing the black panther and wrecking the forklift.

End of game.  The freighter is still in the hands of SHIVA but the agent carrying the final components is dead.

Kohner is the last survivor around the silo.  Pandora King has fallen again after a valiant effort.

60% of the launch computers have been destroyed.
