28mm Spy-Fi

This week I have a selection of miniatures I painted in 2018 to use in my 7TV games.  If you're not familiar with 7TV, it is a fun system that is usable for just about any spy, action or sci-fi setting from movies & tv.  Think James Bond style spies, Doctor Who and everything in between.  Manufacturers included in this post are Beast in the Broch, Black Cat, Black Tree, Crooked Dice, Hasslefree and Reaper.

Two miniatures from Crooked Dice to go with their Department X line: (l-r) General Gordon and Big Tam Frazier.  Big Tam is based on the character Sean Connery played in the movie The Hill, which I watched for the first time when I was painting this miniature last year.

2018 was the year for painting apes.  Just in from Skull Island is a Giant Ape in resin from Crooked Dice. The right arm and front of the head were separate pieces that attached easily.

A Double Agent from Crooked Dice.  Whose side is she really on?

 

From Black Cat Bases, on the left  is HP Lovecraft and his cat.  Black Cat sell several versions, each with a different selection of right hands.  I chose an ancient tome of forbidden knowledge.  On the right is a priest with crucifix and pistol.  He reminds me of the Episcopal priest from the early Peter Jackson movie Dead Alive, who before unleashing his martial arts skills on a group of zombies says (in a cool New Zealand accent) "I kick ass for the Lord!"  Watch the clip now and the rest of the movie later:

The Guru from Crooked Dice is leader of the secret organization SHIVA (Secret Headquarters of International Villainous Agents).  He is accompanied by his three pet black panthers, made by Black Cat.

 

On the left is Horace 'Action' Jackson from Reaper's Bones line.  I've posted him before, though he is now pictured with his new colleague Destiny from Hasslefree.  I need to go watch Shaft (original 70s version only) for some scenario ideas for them.

Two more villains: on the left a Federated Security Commander from Beast In the Broch Miniatures with an alternate Crooked Dice head and on the right an Inhuman Servitor from Crooked Dice.  What nefarious plot is this alien carrying out for his masters?

Every Villain Wants to Rule the World

I am of the opinion that you can never have enough villains.  I have collected a variety of them for my 28mm 'spy-fi' games using the 7TV rules.  Evil masterminds, secret agents, mad scientists, henchmen, mercenaries, aliens, I have them all.  The names below are from the manufacturer's catalog unless otherwise noted.

The model on the left is sold by Crooked Dice as Jack Booted Sadist.  I think it is a dead ringer for the James Bond villain Xenia Onatopp played by Famke Janssen in Goldeneye (1995).  My favorite of the Pierce Brosnan Bond movies.

The model on the right is a Heresy miniature originally sold as the Jon Simm version of The Master in new-era Doctor Who, now sold as Edward Arterton, Supervillain.  He comes with an alternate right hand holding a pistol.

Lancelot Cray, secretive CEO of the international corporation United Radionics (left) and his bodyguard and fixer Lionel (right).  The perfect model for a conniving industrialist in an expensive suit.  Both by Crooked Dice.

Two villains who can be used in a wide variety of roles, sold by Beast in the Broch as FedSec Commander (left) and FedSec Supreme Commander (right).  The robotic hand and eye on the model to the left cast him as an alien or evil cyborg.

Kali (left) and Bolo (right), two specialists in hand-to-hand combat.  Kali has a sword in her right hand that is hard to see at this angle.  Bolo is wearing very sharp claws on his hands in case his feet don't finish the job.  If only someone made a model of Patrick Swayze from 'Roadhouse' to fight Bolo!

Two ninjas from Crooked Dice, sold as Daughters of SHIVA (Secret Headquarters of International Villainous Agents).  I was surprised at how stable the one on the left is given the pose.

"Hey, what are we doing in this post?  We're not villains, just scientists crossing ethical and legal boundaries in pursuit of forbidden knowledge."  Three scientists from Crooked Dice.

The deadly mercenary Kohner (left), from Crooked Dice and an Afghan from Artizan's 2nd Afghan War range.  

These two models should look familiar to any Roger Moore-era James Bond fans.  Jaws (left, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker) and Nick Nack (right, The Man with the Golden Gun).  I think these are very accurate representations of the characters by Crooked Dice.

Two miniatures from Black Cat.  On the right is a mad scientist with a penchant for hideous experiments.  He has a half-lizard, half-cat in his lap. He doesn't have an official name yet, but I think Devious Doctor Finn has a nice ring to it.  His butler is on the left.  I think he is required to go by Jeeves.

 Never trust a mad scientist's butler, he may be holding a pistol behind his back.

Two of the mad doctor's test subjects.  These are great models, sold as Failed Experiments by Crooked Dice.  The heads and non-human arms are separate; there is also an ape-like head and a mechanical claw arm that I haven't used yet.  Was the one on the left transformed in a horrible accident or did he anger the doctor once too often?

Recent Purchase from Black Cat Bases

I received a box from Black Cat Bases recently.  This is the first time I've ordered from them, though I've looked at their website several times.  The recent fall in the British Pound - US Dollar exchange rate has motivated me to make several purchases the last few months; Black Cat also had a sale at the time I ordered.  The package arrived quickly and the contents were packed well.

So what did I get?  Stuff for games of 7TV or Doctor Who, all 28mm scale.  Two large trucks (top left) and one small truck, all made of resin with separate wheels.  These are nice castings with no bubbles and just a few spots needing cleanup with a hobby knife. They'll be useful in my post-apoc games as well.  The large trucks have a good-sized bed for placing cargo.

The 8 miniatures are (l-r): 3 black panthers; a sniper; a priest with crucifix and pistol; a man (H.P. Lovecraft in the product listing) with large book in one hand and a choice of pistol, shotgun, flashlight or open book for the other hand; a mad scientist in wheelchair holding a cat/lizard hybrid; and a butler.  All are clean casts with good detail and minimal flash.

I am very pleased with the service and products from Black Cat and look forward to painting them soon.
