28mm Characters for Saga

One of the standard Saga scenarios in the Book of Battles supplement, Old Feud, includes the use of character figures.  Each player chooses one to add to their army that has a special ability and also needs to be protected.  There are 6 options: The Brute, Counsellor, Traitor, Soldier, Princess, and Mystic.

In 2021, my friend Mike Demana painted up a set of miniatures for use in this scenario, and inspired me to do the same.  I bought the initial minis for the project at Historicon 2022, and gradually added more in various purchases and from my stock of unpainted miniatures.  You can see Mike's work here: Lead Legionaries.

My project soon expanded in size to two sets of characters, one for the classical period and one for dark ages/early medieval.  I painted them in 2022 and 2023.  It was a fun project and a nice change to do some individual models that aren't part of an army.

Classical  (l-r)

Soldier: Successor officer from Aventine

Brute: Thracian from Footsore's Mortal Gods range

Counsellor: Primus Dominus from Footsore's Gangs of Rome range, painted as a Roman senator

Traitor: Primus Domina from Footsore's Gangs of Rome range.  When I first saw this miniature with a dagger, it reminded me of representations of Medea from Greek pottery.  Perfect!

Mystic: Maker unknown, purchased at the Historicon 2022 flea market from a bin full of miniatures.

Princess: Primus Dominus from Footsore's Gangs of Rome range, painted as an Egyptian.

Dark Ages (l-r)

Brute: Giant Viking from Foundry.  I've named him Thorkell the Tall after the early 11th-century historical figure.

Counsellor: Knight Hospitaller from Footsore, originally given away as one of their monthly free miniatures.

Traitor: A Reaper Bones mini, almost as tall as Thorkell, closer to 32mm than 28mm.

Soldier: An Irish Chieftain from Footsore, originally given away as a monthly free miniature.

Princess: Maker unknown, purchased at the Historicon 2022 flea market.

Mystic: I have two miniatures for this one, a pagan and a Christian version, both from Gripping Beast.

28mm Spy-Fi

This week I have a selection of miniatures I painted in 2018 to use in my 7TV games.  If you're not familiar with 7TV, it is a fun system that is usable for just about any spy, action or sci-fi setting from movies & tv.  Think James Bond style spies, Doctor Who and everything in between.  Manufacturers included in this post are Beast in the Broch, Black Cat, Black Tree, Crooked Dice, Hasslefree and Reaper.

Ape-X from Reaper's Bones line.  A great model and very fun to paint.

Three Doctor Who characters: (l-r) The renegade Time Lord Omega from Black Tree Design, the twelfth Doctor and the eighth Doctor, both from Crooked Dice though sadly no longer available.

Two miniatures from Crooked Dice to go with their Department X line: (l-r) General Gordon and Big Tam Frazier.  Big Tam is based on the character Sean Connery played in the movie The Hill, which I watched for the first time when I was painting this miniature last year.

2018 was the year for painting apes.  Just in from Skull Island is a Giant Ape in resin from Crooked Dice. The right arm and front of the head were separate pieces that attached easily.

If you are wondering about the relative sizes, here is a group shot with the Giant Ape, Ape-X, Warlord's Zombie Beast (from my previous post Apocalypse Survivors II) and a regular human from Brigade Games.

A Double Agent from Crooked Dice.  Whose side is she really on?

From Black Cat Bases, on the left  is HP Lovecraft and his cat.  Black Cat sell several versions, each with a different selection of right hands.  I chose an ancient tome of forbidden knowledge.  On the right is a priest with crucifix and pistol.  He reminds me of the Episcopal priest from the early Peter Jackson movie Dead Alive, who before unleashing his martial arts skills on a group of zombies says (in a cool New Zealand accent) "I kick ass for the Lord!"  Watch the clip now and the rest of the movie later:

The Guru from Crooked Dice is leader of the secret organization SHIVA (Secret Headquarters of International Villainous Agents).  He is accompanied by his three pet black panthers, made by Black Cat.

On the left is Horace 'Action' Jackson from Reaper's Bones line.  I've posted him before, though he is now pictured with his new colleague Destiny from Hasslefree.  I need to go watch Shaft (original 70s version only) for some scenario ideas for them.

On the left a police detective from Crooked Dice; on the right martial artist Fist of Golgo from Hasslefree.

Two more villains: on the left a Federated Security Commander from Beast In the Broch Miniatures with an alternate Crooked Dice head and on the right an Inhuman Servitor from Crooked Dice.  What nefarious plot is this alien carrying out for his masters?

On the left is secret agent Winter Morgan from Hasslefree; on the right a sniper from Black Cat.

These are the last group from my New Year's photoshoot.  Check back soon for a convention report from Siege of Augusta.

28mm Heroes

Reinforcements for the good guys!  I painted these for use in my Doctor Who and 7TV games.

Two heroes from Crooked Dice.  They make a number of heroic archetypes for use in their 7TV game.  Pandora King is on the left, ready for fisticuffs.  CD make 2 versions of her, this the classic version and my favorite; there is another version with a pistol and different features.  I believed she is modeled after Mrs. Peel from 'The Avengers'.  A veteran police detective is on the right, ready to restore law and order with his trusty revolver.  I just received 16 policemen from Crooked Dice this week so backup is en route.  I painted these in early 2017.

Seen here are 2 new additions to my UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) faction.  They are based in my new city style, and I have converted the older ones to match.  They are a corporal (left) and sniper (right). Both are by Crooked Dice, who make a variety of 70s/Falklands-era British Army models. They mix well with the Black Tree miniatures that make up the bulk of my UNIT troops; I also have some MoFo Falklands range mortars and crew.  I painted these in early 2017.

This is a Reaper Bones miniature I bought from the Reaper stand at Historicon 2016.  Although my daughter has painted a number of Bones models, this was the first one I painted myself.  It is on the tall side compared to Heresy/Crooked Dice/Black Tree, but I like it.  It fits in perfectly with the 1960s/1970s 7TV setting.  I painted in it late 2016.

Thanks for looking!
