28mm Minions

An assortment of fourteen 28mm Minions by Crooked Dice.  They can fill a wide variety of roles in games such as henchmen of an evil mastermind, security guards, crew of a space station/undersea base/oil rig, etc.  They mix well size-wise with the Copplestone guards in orange uniforms that I posted back in 2013.  I was not thrilled how the orange uniforms turned out on the Copplestone guards, so after some experimentation I decided to go with blue uniforms.  I started with Coat d'Arms High Elf Blue, added a coat of Army Painter Blue Tone ink, then highlighted in the original color.  I like how they turned out.  Painted in 2017.

The commander and an administrator/accountant/non-combatant.  With some modification, the commander could be used for Colonel Tigh from Battlestar Galactica.
Four armed with rifles:

Four armed with submachineguns:

A grenadier, a mechanic and a minion with flamethrower:

Dog handler and dog:

CD also makes them unarmed, armed with batons and different heavy weapons.  They come with separate heads, plus they sell many varieties of heads separately so there is a lot of room for customization.  Great miniatures to have in a modern collection.

28mm Firefly Crew, Rogue Agents and Vehicle

Some more additions to my 28mm collection I use for Doctor Who and 7TV games.

Three of the ‘inspired by Firefly’ minis by Heresy.  From left to right: Mal, Book and Kaylee.  These were fun to paint and of course it was a great show.  I may get the rest of the crew from Heresy the next time I order something from them.

These are a pack of 3 ‘Rogue Agents’, from Copplestone's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang range.  They can fill a lot of roles; I especially like using the one on the right as a Double Agent in 7TV games.  His eyepatch gives his dastardly intentions away!

A vehicle by Crooked Dice.  It is also available with an astronaut driver.  I actually bought this already painted from someone online.  I rarely buy painted miniatures, preferring to paint my own.  However, it was high quality, a good price and looked like it would match my existing security guards.  All I did was to give it 2 quick coats of Testor's Dullcote.

With one of my Artizan Wolverine Security guards for scale.

Doctor Who Project - Villains

This post covers some of the villains I have painted for my Doctor Who project.

First up are the 'KGB Men' and 'More KGB Men' packs from Copplestone.  I use them as generic bad guys.  There are 3 miniatures in each pack, however I have mixed them up for these pictures.  They were painted over a couple of days in January 2012 for use in a game I ran at that year's Siege of Augusta.

Below are 2 packs of 'Guards in Hard Hats', also from Copplestone.  I had a difficult time painting these figures for many reasons.  The miniatures themselves are fine.  I decided I wanted to paint them in orange jumpsuits to be generic guards for a factory, refinery, evil mastermind's lair, etc.  While I had a dark orange paint I liked for the base color, I tried many lighter colors before finding a bottle of Ral Partha/Iron Wind Orange at the Little Wars convention in April 2012.  After finishing the painting, I applied my usual wash to add some shading but for some reason I don't think it looks as good as normal.  I was then struck by the infamous 'matte spray fog' and had to repaint sections.  In the end, I don't like them very much.  I'm not sure if it is how they look or because of the long process.  I will still use them in games though!

Next is a group of 6 Ogrons.  From Wikipedia: "Ogrons are low-intelligence, ape-like hominids who live in scattered communities on an unnamed planet on the outer fringes of the Milky Way, far from the central spaceways. The dominant lifeform on their home planet is a giant slug-like lizard named the Eater, and the Ogrons both pray to and are preyed on by it.  Ogrons are hired mercenaries. Those who have employed their services include the Master and the Daleks.

Ogrons appeared in 3 stories of the 3rd Doctor: Day of the Daleks, Carnival of Monsters and Frontier in Space.  Here is a picture from one of the episodes:

And here is my take on the Ogrons.  These are Black Tree Design miniatures and I painted them in the spring/summer of 2012.  There are 2 different poses, but only the position of arm with the gun varies.

Last, but certainly not least, are 2 versions of the Master. Below is a picture of all the Masters from the show in order of appearance.  The first 3 in the top row are from the original era of the show, the 4th from the 1996 movie, and the 5th and 6th from the newer shows.  I have miniatures of the 2nd, decayed one and the 6th but have not painted them yet.

On the left is the original Master, as portrayed in the 1970s by Roger Delgado.  On the right is the 3rd version, played in the 1980s by Anthony Ainley (my favorite as he was the first one I saw).  Both are by Black Tree Miniatures and were painted in 2011.

Doctor Who Project - Security Guards

This post covers a group of six 28mm security guards for my Doctor Who project.  They are Artizan Designs figures, from their 1960s-inspired Kiss Kiss Bang Bang range.  The packs I used are KKBB204 (Guards) and KKBB 206 (Guards II).  I purchased them from Brigade Games at Cold Wars 2011.  That is a quick turnaround for me!

I'll be using these figures for various purposes in my games, from security guards to mercenaries to unwitting tools of alien invaders.

When I was deciding the color scheme, I chose blue for the jumpsuits.  Five of the 6 figures have a triangle insignia on the right arm, which I painted yellow.  I am a life-long Ohio State Buckeyes fan, and their archrivals are the Michigan Wolverines, whose colors are blue and yellow.  So it seems fitting to name this group of evildoers 'Wolverine Security'.

I used a variety of hobby and craft paints, including Vallejo, Ral Partha/Iron Wind, Reaper, Privateer, Howard Hues and Ceramcoat.  The jumpsuits are Vallejo Oxford Blue, with a drybrush of Oxford Blue & White on top.  The final step in painting is a black wash.  My first application of Krylon Matte Finish spray resulted in the dreaded 'frost'.  It was removed with a coat of brush-on gloss finish, followed by a repaint of the guns and boots.  Two coats of matte spray under less humid conditions, from the same spraycan, and they were done.  The figures are all based on slottabases, with metal washers attached on the bottom with epoxy for storage on magnetic sheeting.

I have mixed the 2 packs together and am not sure which figures came in each pack.  First group of 3 guards:

Second group of 3 guards:

I like how they turned out.  I may add some more figures to Wolverine Security in the future, once I have cleared some of my painting backlog.

For my games I use the Doctor Who Miniatures Game (DWMG) rules, available for free on the internet at http://www.drwhominiatures.co.uk/ and with an active Yahoo group.
